On July 20th HM.Clause Pacific joined 5 other seed companies to test, evaluate, and then showcase their up and coming tomato varieties to Carnarvon growers. Carnarvon is the main tomato and capsicum production region for Western Australia during winter. The trial site was jointly managed by the Department of Agriculture and the Carnarvon Growers Association with all varieties exposed to the same growing conditions. The afternoon was well attended with a steady flow of growers eager to see what new varieties could be available in the future and most importantly to give our sales team feedback on the qualities they are looking for in new varieties – this feedback was delivered through the Vegetables WA Extension officer. Growers showed particular interest in the resistance packages included in some of our new material i.e. nematodes, powdery mildew, TSWV and Fol: 1,2,3.
Varieties that attracted the most attention were: Colt F1– new roma with very healthy, vigorous plant, longer fruit shape and great weather marking tolerance. CLX 37784 – an improved Genio type cherry with added Fol:3 and TSWV and higher fruit numbers. CLX37840 – a high yielding grape type with good fruit size, which is maintained to the top of the plant and good plant vigour. Duncan F1 – continues to be our flagship gourmet with high yield, ideal fruit size and shape with great fruit quality and a combination of TSWV and Fol:1,2,3 resistance.
