Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, in collaboration with a others in their community, has been involved in field trials to determine the best tomato varieties for Texas. This year, Harris Moran’s 1823 takes home the title of the 2017 Rodeo Tomato. Attendees of the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo, were the first to be able to purchase the variety. Tomatoses are awarded for its ability to grow well in Texas. These varieties need to produce a good canopy, shielding the fruit in the hot Texas weather, provide a good yield, are aesthetically pleasing, and have robust plant health, including disease resistance. Proceeds from the rodeo tomato sale go to horticulture scholarships.
